Abstract

SOME THOUGHTS ON 20 YEARS AND 200 NEWSLETTERS: Many of you who have been reading my newsletters in Nutritional Perspectives over the years may not be aware that this newsletter series actually started back in 1985. Therefore, what you are now reading is the 201st newsletter I have written in my life. Interestingly, it began as a two page promotional piece that was typed on an electric typewriter (You do remember those, don’t you?). Within a year, it had evolved to a monthly mailing that contained selected scientific abstracts relating to clinical nutrition. Unfortunately, while I had impressed myself tremendously with all the “two dollar” words I had packed into a space of two pages, it was only 2-3 years ago that I finally met someone who actually recalled reading those early newsletters. Fortunately, for me, this lack of attention turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Why? After several months of writing newsletters that no one recalled seeing, I decided to change directions and write a newsletter on food allergies where I gave my opinion of what the research meant clinically. To my delight, a few people let me know that they read the newsletter and found it helpful. Buoyed with renewed confidence, a format was born consisting of literature review and commentary that has evolved over the years to what you see today.
