Abstract
50 million or more Americans are hypertensive. Less than half of these people are aware that they have high blood pressure. Of those that know they have high blood pressure only one out of three have reduced their blood pressure to below 140/90 mm Hg. A review of the literature reveals that the risk of developing hypertension increases with age, poor aerobic fitness, excess weight, hyperglycemia, respiratory disease, and stress. Most people will develop hypertension before they die.
