Abstract
HEARTBURN is defined as a “burning sensation in the substernal area due to reflux of acid contents of the stomach into the lower esophagus” by Taber’s Medical Dictionary.1 The purpose of this document is to define heartburn, review the physiology of heartburn and the gastric system, review both the drug and natural medicine application for the treatment of heartburn and discuss the health benefits and adverse side-effects of the common treatments.
