Abstract

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IS THE BODY'S DEFENSE AGAINST INFECTION by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. When attacked by pathogens, either internally or externally, the cells of the innate immune system detect and eliminate these pathogens. The body is also capable of mounting a second line of defense through the adaptive or specific immune system. In this type of immune response, a specific kind of memory is being retained so that the next time the pathogen attacks, it is recognized and a specific response is subsequently generated to eliminate it.
