Abstract
THE IMPACT OF MALNUTRITION IN THE ELDERLY population has become a point of growing public concern. It is estimated that one in three elderly patients (defined as over the age of 65 years of age) admitted into a hospital setting are malnourished. The affects of malnutrition results in escalating cost due to decreased healing, increased medical complications and lengthened hospital stays. Economic burden in the United States is estimated annually at $157.7 billion dollars or $508 per citizen.
